Where Old Rails Meet New Mornings: The Story Behind Iron Leaf Tea Co.
Welcome to our very first blog post. Pull up a cup of your favorite brew — we've got a story to tell.
A Name Forged in History
If you've ever walked along the old railroad tracks in Johnson City, Tennessee, you've felt it — that quiet hum of history beneath your feet. The iron rails that once carried goods, people, and dreams across the Appalachian foothills are more than relics. They're reminders of a time when connection meant everything.
That's exactly where Iron Leaf Tea Co. was born.
Our name is a tribute to those historic iron rails and the spirit they represent — strength, movement, and bringing people together. We took that heritage and blended it with something we're deeply passionate about: exceptional tea.
Why Tea? Why Here?
Johnson City has no shortage of great coffee shops. But when it came to finding a place dedicated to the art of tea — real, carefully sourced, loose leaf tea — there was a gap. A big one.
I'm James, the owner and sole operator of Iron Leaf Tea Co., and I wanted to change that. Not with a chain-store approach, but with something personal. Something rooted in this community.
Our little shop sits at 2422 W Walnut Street, Suite B, right along the Frontier Trail. It's a cozy 266-square-foot space designed for one thing: getting a phenomenal cup of tea into your hands as quickly and warmly as possible. We're grab-and-go by design, but every cup is made with the kind of care you'd expect from a sit-down experience.
More Than 30 Blends, Each With a Story
Every tea on our menu carries a railroad-themed name — a small nod to the tracks that built this town. From bold black teas that hit like a morning locomotive to delicate white teas as smooth as a sunset over the Blue Ridge, we've curated over 30 unique loose leaf blends you won't find anywhere else in the region.
Here's a taste of what we're working with:
-
Black, green, white, and oolong teas for the purists
-
Chai, matcha, and rooibos for the adventurous
-
Milk teas and fruit teas for those who like it fun
-
Granny B's Southern Sweet Tea — because we're still in Tennessee
-
Iron Leaf REFUELS — our loaded 20 oz iced teas with real brewed tea, lemonade, bold syrups, and a sweetened matcha shot
We also offer a Custom Wellness Tea Box with six blends designed to support everything from morning energy to a restful night's sleep. Think of it as a tea journey for your whole day.
Built for This Community
Iron Leaf Tea Co. isn't trying to be everything to everyone. We're trying to be the best tea experience in East Tennessee — one cup at a time.
We opened our doors on January 2, 2026, and every day since has been about learning, growing, and connecting with the people who walk through that door. Whether you're an ETSU student grabbing a quick matcha between classes, a Frontier Trail walker looking for a warm pick-me-up, or someone discovering loose leaf tea for the first time — this place is for you.
